    Across two discs, Ane Brun has compiled 20 tracks — some covers, some studio outtakes, and some collaborations. Some songs are just Brun alone with her acoustic guitar (e.g., “From Me To You”), while others are a little more involved, with orchestration and several backing musicians (e.g., “The Opening”). For a collection of odds and sods, Rarities is in surprisingly good shape. Not only are these songs good, but the album makes for a mostly cohesive experience. The first disc is mostly stripped back, acoustic work, and it sounds almost as if all of these songs were recorded with the intention of being released together. The second disc, on the other hand, incorporates much more backing arrangements, and this latter half does have the feeling of a mixed-bag, tonally and thematically.
A significant amount of Rarities is songs originally performed by other artists. Brun has been commissioned to do her fair share of tribute albums, and some of the fruits of that labor finds its way here. There are covers of Bob Dylan (“She Belongs To Me”), Depeche Mode (“Fly On The Windscreen”), Bjork (“Joga”), The Beatles (“From Me To You”), Beyonce Knowles (“Halo”), and Elvis (“Crawfish”) among others. Importantly, on all of these songs, Brun reinterprets the source material, and many of these songs sound vastly different from the original works. When “Halo”, “From Me To You”, and “Daring To Love” appear on the first disc, they sound like Ane Brun originals, despite their ubiquity.
